The hundred years from 1891 to 1991 saw the development of a systematic papal teaching on society that has proved helpful and influential well beyond the Catholic Church. This teaching revolves around certain key principles and themes, which have been summarized in many lists. We can reduce them to four:

(1) Personality, or the inalienable dignity of man and woman as created and called to perfection by God.

I teach academically gifted students in a public high school, and I recently received a mailing about an essay contest my students could enter. The book to be analyzed is Ayn Rand's Anthem. I have been searching for a good book to use with my older students (age 14), whom I see for 40 minutes, once a week. I notice there is a lot of emotion around this issue, for some reason (!). Personally, I am prepared to believe something serious is happening, and something could and should be done about it, even if human activity is not the primary cause. What tipped me over to this position was partly a conference put on by the Dominicans in Oxford.

I have been wondering about the whole ethical investment idea, knowing that, at least in the U.S., there are any number of groups willing to help one find businesses that do not break the investor's moral code. What I have not been able to find, however, is anyone interested in blending seamless-garment-Catholic issues and animal/environment issues. Any ideas?
